Man arrested in East Worthing rape investigation

A man has been arrested by detectives investigating the rape of a woman on the seafront in East Worthing on Sunday evening 8 September.

The 19-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday evening (10 September), on suspicion of the rape, and is currently in custody for interview and further enquiries.

The 26-year-old victim was walking along New Parade off the A259 Brighton Road, East Worthing, near the Splash Point building site, shortly before 10.30pm on Sunday when she was approached by a man who initially asked directions but then took her to the beach and raped her.

The man then left the area on foot.

The woman sought help from a passer-by and the police were informed. She is currently receiving support from specialist officers.

Detective Sergeant Sally Hodges of the West Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit said; "Our investigation is continuing. If you were in the area at the time and saw anything suspicious, or if you have any other information that might help, please contact us online or by calling 101, quoting Operation Neston."
